Both are wonderful, but they're not interchangeable, and the differences matter more than people expect once the puppy actually comes home. Here's what we've learned raising both.

The Parent Breeds Behind Each

A Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature Poodle. A Cavapoo crosses a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle. The Maltese brings a small, alert, affectionate companion-dog history, bred for centuries purely to be a devoted lap dog. The Cavalier brings a gentler, more people-pleasing spaniel temperament, historically bred as a royal companion but with a bit more sporting instinct in its background. Maltipoos generally stay a bit smaller and lighter, which matters if you're specifically after a true lap-sized dog that's easy to carry or travel with. Cavapoo coats tend to be a bit thicker and wavier, closer to the Cavalier's silky coat combined with Poodle curl.
